So We Went On A Holiday!
Cairns to Victoria with 2 kids under 4
By LYNN WITTEVEEN
So, by now some of you would have figured out that we have been on a holiday. Yep we packed up the kids (1yrs & 3Yrs) and spent just over 3 ½ weeks on the road. We took our SUV Grand Deluxe Mega Camper our Nissan Patrol and 3 bikes!
We get a lot of questions here at Savannah about how we do things when we go camping so I thought I’d pop together a bit of a post, so you can see all the tips and tricks we use when we go camping.
Day 1 – 2nd Nov – Cairns – Airlie Beach 622km
Discovery Parks Airlie Beach $45.00
So we packed up and got moving at around 6am, after a quick stop over at nana & poppies to drop off Hudson and say goodbye we were on the road! Teagan had contracted a bout of conjunctivitis at kindy the day before so we had to pop into a chemist in Innisfail, and we stopped at the Townsville office of SUV to say hello and chat all things camper related! After lunch we were on the way! Our first tank of fuel got us to Bowen fuel & chocolate stop (yes please) then our first nights stop was Airlie Beach – we stayed at Discovery Parks – Airlie Beach and prebooked over the phone, they left us a package in the night safe and left us to it. While dad set up the camper the kids and I popped off to the camp kitchen and made dinner. Then it was straight to bed for 2 little girls as you can imagine after a long day Hailey went straight to sleep but Teagan was a little too excited and didn’t pop off to sleep until mum and dad came to bed later on.
Day 2 – 3rd Nov – Airlie Beach – Lake Monduran 735km
Lake Monduran Holiday Park $34.00
What a great big day on the road, the girls are both great
kids and travel really well in the car! Daddy wanted to push it a bit today so
that he could take the girls on a trip at the Mary Valley Rattler. No one would be surprised to hear that we
didn’t get up early enough and took too long at lunch for that to happen, so at
about 4-5pm we did a bit of googling and found the Lake Monduran Holiday
Park, this is a lovely park right on the
lake plenty of grass for the kids to play games, and if you were taking the
tinnie the boat ramp was not too far away.
Day 3 – 4th Nov – Lake Monduran – Gympie 204km
Gympie Caravan Park $35.00
Today was a bit of a lazy day, we only travelled 204km and made it to the Mary Valley Rattler in time to have some lunch at the station restaurant before the train took off at 2pm, as you can imagine the girls had a great time on the train! The Mary Valley Rattler is a great trip if you have the time and would like to see the area from behind a steam train. The Caravan park in Gympie leaves a bit to be desired, it was clean but the sites weren’t exactly flat, and the toilets were in portable buildings, so if you like a bit more than this I wouldn’t recommend this park for you. The locals tell us that there is a free roadside stop area that is close by, but we were all ready booked into the caravan park so didn’t look into this option any further.
Day 4 – 5th Nov – Gympie – Coonabarrabran 813km
John Oxley Caravan Park $32.00
Today was another long day on the road, we left Gympie bright and early and got into Coonabarrabran at about 8pm. We are sorry to the truck drivers that we encountered along the way who thought we must have been mad, passing them and then passing them again and again and again……… because when you hear a little voice from the back of the car that says “I need to go to the toilet” you have to stop and get to that toilet as quickly as you can! We stopped in Kingaroy and bought some supplies for the road that we had forgotten and a chook and rolls for lunch. Our lunch stop was in Moonie QLD which is about 100km north of the NSW Border.
Day 5 – 6th Nov – Coonabarrabran – Albury 692km
We told the girls that they were going to see their Uncles tonight so they were ready and raring to go this morning. Packed up in record time and on the road again! We stopped for lunch in Parks at the Observatory watched the dish move and spoke to each other in the parabolic dishes in the gardens. Packed up and hit the road and made it to Uncle Neils house by dinner time.
Stay tuned for installment #2!
